The Whispers - Rock Steady

1960년대 중반에 월래스 스콧(Wallace Scott)과 월터 스콧(Walter Scott) 형제를 주축으로 캘리포니아에서 결성된 흑인 R&B-소울 보컬그룹 위스퍼스(The Whispers)는 70년대에 R&B차트에서는 그래도 인기가 좋았던 편이지만, 주류 팝 차트에는 40위권에서 명함을 내밀기도 힘들 정도로 고전했다. 결국 그들은 80년대에 CBS(현재의 Sony) 산하의 솔라(Solar) 레이블에 소속되면서 팝 차트에서도 서서히 인기 밴드가 되더니, 마침내 그들에게는 최고의 히트곡인 이 노래를 87년에 발표한다. 그런데, 여기서 한 가지 알아야 할 것은 바로 이 레이블에 같이 소속되었던 그룹 더 딜(The Deele)의 주축 멤버이자 작곡 콤비인 엘 에이 리드(L.A. Reid)와 베이비페이스(Babyface)가 이들의 음악을 작곡하고 프로듀싱해주었던 것이 히트의 주요인이었다는 점이다. 이 콤비의 초기 작품들을 대표할 만한 신시사이저와 전자 드럼 편곡에 근거한 멋진 그루브 위에 노련한 멤버들의 하모니가 조화를 이룬 이 곡의 매력은 세월이 지나도 여전히 멋지다. 얼마전에 용산의 중고 LP매장에 갔다가 (그 시절에 찍혀나온건 알았으나 구입을 놓쳤던) 이 곡의 12인치 싱글 컬러 빽판을 드디어 입수했기에, 그 기념으로 포스팅한다.
