  93년 데뷔 싱글 [Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover]가 Top 10 싱글이 되면서 주목받는 신인 여성 싱어-송라이터로 각광받았던 소피 비 호킨스(Sophie B. Hawkins)는 2집 [Whaler]에서 싱글 <As I Lay Me Down>이 그에 못지않은 히트를 기록할 때까지는 제법 재미를 봤으나, 3집 [Timbre]가 예상 밖의 실패를 하면서 이제는 대중에게 상당히 잊혀진 존재처럼 빗겨나가 있다. 하지만 그 이후에도 그녀는 4집 [Wilderness]를 발표했었고, 이제는 인디 레이블로 옮겨 어쿠스틱 라이브 실황 앨범도 꾸준히 내며 재기의 발판을 다지고 있다.

 

여기 소개하는 이 곡 [Only Love]는 2집에서 두 번째로 싱글 커트했던 곡으로 차트에서는 40-50위권 히트를 거두는 데 그쳤지만, 개인적으로 (앨범 속의 너무 느려터진 오리지널 버전보다) Radio Edit 버전으로 재창조되면서 확실한 곡의 매력을 되찾은 트랙인데, 전반적으로 빨라진 리듬감, 건반과 타악기 연주에 뛰어난 연주 실력을 가진 그녀의 실로폰(? - 이게 무슨 이름이 있는데 생각이 안난다. 댓글로 알려주심 수정예정...) 연주가 가미되고, 그 뒤에 흐르는 (혹자는 아메리칸 아이돌 심사위원으로만 기억하는) 80년대 세션 베이스의 거장 랜디 잭슨(Randy Jackson)의 탁월한 베이스터치가 곡을 멋지게 바꿔놓았다. 시디 싱글을 구하기 쉽지 않은 국내 상황에서 우연히 명동 모 중고음반점에서 이 곡의 카세트 싱글을 구해서 그간 들었었는데, 얼마전에 이베이(Ebay)에서 0.99달러에 누가 올렸길래, 조금 올려 베팅했는데, 아무도 그 후에 더 한 사람이 없어 그냥 0.99에 낙찰받았다. (근데 배송료가 5달러 들었다...--;) 사실, 이 Radio Edit버전은 이후 그녀의 어느 앨범(심지어 베스트앨범까지도)에도 실려있지 않기 때문에 그녀의 팬이라면 이 시디 싱글을 한 번 챙겨봄이 괜찮을 것 같다.
