Genesis - Dancing With The Moonlight Knight

제너시스(Genesis)는 이제는 분명 필 콜린스(Phil Collins)가 리드하는 밴드처럼 인식되고 있다. (그래서 그가 탈퇴했던 기간동안 전혀 힘을 못썼다.) 하지만 실질적인 리더는 엄밀히 말하면 키보디스트 토니 뱅크스(Tony Banks)라고 해야 맞고, 필 이전에는 또한 피터 가브리엘(Peter Gabriel)이라는 걸출한 뮤지션이 리드 보컬 역할을 했다. 그가 있을 때까지의 제너시스가 실질적인 프로그레시브 록 밴드였다고 누군가는 그렇게 말하기도 하지만, 나는 필 콜린스 시대의 제너시스도 좋아하기에 그 말은 별로 좋아하지 않는다. 물론 그가 리드하면서 특히 80년대에 컨템포러리 팝-록 밴드로 변모한 것도 사실이지만... 하지만 [We Can't Dance] 앨범 속의 그 대곡들에서도 여전히 그들은 멋진 밴드였기에, 난 이 밴드를 좋아하지 않을 수 없다.

그런데, 오늘 밤, 이상하게 입가에서 이 노래가 맴돈다... 필의 목소리가 아닌, 피터의 목소리로 녹음된 73년 앨범 [Selling England By The Pound]의 첫곡이었던 이 노래 <Dancing With The Moonlight Knight>가 말이다. 형님이 라이선스반으로 이 앨범을 사 왔을 때, 성시완씨가 라디오에서 이 노래를 종종 틀어줬을 때, 정말 매력적인 곡이라 생각했었다. 70년대가 아니었으면 불가능했을 음악... 가끔은 이런 음악들이 그립다. 근데,... 제너시스는 '영국을 파운드로 팝니다'라는 시니컬한 제목으로 음반을 냈는데도, 허위사실 유포죄로 구속영장이 청구된 적은 없는 것으로 아는데....--;;
