4월 22일은 지구의 날(Earth Day)이다. 사실 대학생 시절 보스턴 어학연수를 가기 전까지는 이런 날이 있다는 것도 제대로 몰랐다. 그 때도 '지구의 날'을 기념하여 보스턴 강변 무대에서 대형 무료 콘서트가 있었기 때문에 처음 알게 된 거였으니까. 잠시 백과사전의 설명을 퍼와보면,
"1970년 4월 22일 미국에서 게이로드 넬슨 상원의원이 주창하고 당시 대학생이던 데니스 헤이스가 조직한 환경보호촉구 워싱턴 집회에 환경운동가를 비롯해 국회의원, 시민, 각 지역단체, 각급 학교 학생 등 2,000만여 명이 자발적으로 참여해 대규모 시위를 벌인 데서 비롯되었다. 미국에서는 이 날을 기념해 매년 4월 22일마다 전국에서 각종 행사를 개최하고 있다. 이 행사는 1980년대 들어 다른 나라에서도 기념하기 시작하여, 1990년에는 140개국에서 2억 명 이상이 행사에 참가했으며 2002년에는 184개국 5,000여 단체가 참가하여 명실공히 세계적인 기념일이 되었다. 한국에서는 시민단체 주도로 1990년에 남산에서 처음으로 지구의 날 행사가 개최된 이래 '차 없는 거리' 행사와 같은 다양한 환경문제를 주제로 매년 기념행사를 열고 있다."
최근 전 세계의 National Geographic Channel이 지구의 날을 기념하여 다양한 특별 기획들을 방영하고 있는 것 같은데, 이 뮤직비디오는 그 일환으로 일본 NGC채널이 하워드와 함께 제작한 작품이다. (노래는 원래 2008년에 포드캐스트 형식으로 앨범 수록 없이 발표한 곡이며, 앞선 포스팅에서 언급했던 그의 새앨범의 일본판에만 특별 수록된다.) 노래의 메시지와 뮤직비디오의 주제가 잘 어울리는 것 같아 보기 좋다.
