Testament - The Ballad

  고등학교때 심지 음악 감상실에서 우연히 한 두번 보게 되면서 알게된 이 싱글 [The Ballad]와 헤비메탈 밴드 테스타먼트(Testament)는 일부에서는 '메탈리카의 아류'란 비판도 했지만, 적어도 바로 앞에서 먼저 스타덤을 얻은 스래쉬메탈 밴드들 - 메탈리카, 메가데스, 슬레이어 등 - 에 못지않은 고정 팬층을 확보했던 밴드였고, 90년대 후반에는 그룹 음악의 핵심인 기타리스트 알렉스 스콜닉(Alex Scholnic)의 탈퇴로 한동안 방황도 했지만, 작년에 라이브 앨범 [Live In London]과 그 DVD로 원년 멤버로 자신들이 다시 뭉쳤음을 대중에게 확인시켜주었다. 그들의 88년작 [Practice What You Preach]에 수록된 이 소프트한(?) 트랙은 뮤직비디오의 그 우울한 분위기가 가중되어 가사에 담겨있는 이별의 아픔과 그 의미를 되씹는 주인공의 심정이 더욱 비장하게 느껴진다. "어디를 가든 잘 되나 봐라, 삶이 니 맘대로 흘러가진 않을걸?"하는 넋두리는 사랑하는 이에게 버림받은 사람들의 마음 속에서 표현은 못하더라도 품고 있는 진정한 단검의 날(Dagger's Edge)이 아닐까?
