[Teen Pop의 추억] (2) Martika - Toy Soldiers

80년대 말 마티카(Martika)라는 여가수의 등장은 필자에게는 팝을 듣는 또 다른 즐거움 중에 하나였다. 비록 2장의 앨범을 끝으로 주류에서는 영영 사라져버렸으나, 20살 나이에 걸맞지 않는 풍부한 가창 능력과 액티브한 무대 매너는 다른 선배 댄스 가수들에게 뒤지지않는 '워너비 마돈나'였으니 말이다. 그리고 적어도 이 싱글 [Toy Soldiers]만큼은 그녀를 원 히트 원더(One-Hit Wonder)라고만 단정하기엔 무색할 정도의 매력을 발표된지 17년이 되어가는 이 시점에도 선사한다. (하긴, 젊은 친구들은 에미넴의 [Like Toy Soldiers]를 통해서야 이 곡을 알았을지도 모르지만...) 마약 중독으로 인해 세상을 등진 친구에게 보내는 이별가는 당시 아버지 부시 정권 하에서 훌륭한 Anti-Drug Song역할을 다 하기도 했다.
