Pebbles - Girlfriend

  지금이야 한 풀 꺾인 건 사실이지만, 지금의 팀바랜드(Timbaland)와 윌 아이엠(Will.I.Am)처럼 80년대 후반부터 90년대 중반까지 흑인음악계부터 팝-댄스씬까지 리듬 중심의 팝송들은 엘에이 리드(L.A. Reid)와 베이비페이스(Babyface) 콤비가 장악했었다. 그 당시 빌보드 차트에서 흑인가수가 부른 히트곡들 중에 두 사람 이름 안들어간 곡이 별로 없을 정도로 팝계의 모든 아티스트들이 그들의 프로듀싱이나 작곡을 원한 것이 한 두 가지가 아니었으니 ... 이들의 90년대야 워낙 잘 알려졌지만, 오히려 이들의 80년대는 관련 앨범들이 별로 라이센스 된 것이 많지 않아 모르는 이들이 많다. 그래서 언제 한 번 L.A.-Babyface사단의 계보를 한 번 정리해볼까 생각하는데, 이제 자료가 얼추 수집이 되어가고 있는 듯하다. 그 가운데, 한 때 엘에이 리드의 아내이기도 했었던, 이 사단의 '형수님' 소리를 들었던 여성 보컬이 있었으니, 그녀가 바로 페블스(Pebbles)다.
  사실 먼저 데뷔한게 죄라고, 1,2집을 통해 그렇게 성공을 거둬놓고도, 이들 콤비와 결별하고 싱어-송라이터의 길을 확실히 다진 3집이 죽을 쑤는 바람에 결국 R&B팝 씬에서 사라졌지만, 지금도 그녀의 히트곡들은 자꾸 듣고 싶어지게 만드는 나름의 매력이 있다. (아직도 그 당시 왜 오아시스 레코드가 그녀의 1집을 라이센스 발매를 안했는지 궁금하다. 워너에서 나온 2집 LP는 참 열심히 들었다.) 이제 외국사이트에 주문해 중고로 구한 그녀의 [Greatest Hits]앨범이 입수되었으니, 이젠 좀 편리하게 들을 수 있으리라. 아래에 그녀의 데뷔곡이자 R&B차트 1위곡 (싱글차트는 5위쯤?) [Girlfriend]를 올려본다. (또다른 히트곡 [Mercedes Boy]는 나중에 그녀 칼럼을 제대로 쓸 때 올리겠다.) 프린스식 80년대형 훵크 사운드를 신시사이저만으로 구현하려 했던 그들의 사운드의 고전이라 할 수 있는 트랙과 AFKN에서 봤던 이 뮤비를 오랜만에 보니 참 감회가 남다르다..ㅋㅋ
