조 샘플(Joe Sample)이 이끌었던 크루세이더스(The Crusaders)와 함께 부른 1979년 작품 <Street Life>를 통해 처음 자신을 알린 흑인 여성 보컬리스트 랜디 크로포드는 한국 팬들에게는 사실 이 곡으로 더 많이 각인되어 있다. 1986년 앨범 [Abstract Emotions]의 수록곡이자 영국 싱글 차트 4위까지 올랐던 이 아름다운 발라드는 이 노래에서 나온 'Almaz'가 과연 누구인가에 대한 궁금증이 계속 이어져왔던 노래이기도 하다. 항간에는 태어날 때부터 뇌성마비였던 그녀의 조카를 노래했다는 풍문도 돌았지만, 결국 2008년 그녀가 데일리 텔러그래프(Daily Telegraph)를 통해 발표한 내용이 이제 거의 정설이 되었다. 그녀의 이웃에 이사왔었던 에리트리아(나이지리아의 식민지배를 받다가 1993년 독립했으나 여전히 수많은 분쟁 속에 피폐해진 아프리카 국가) 난민 부부와의 인연에서 만들어진 곡이라고 하는데, 남편이 랜디에게 아내에 대한 노래를 만들어달라는 요청을 했고, 그 결과 이 곡이 만들어졌다고 한다. 하지만, 막상 곡이 완성되고 발표될 즈음에는 그들은 다른 곳으로 이사를 했다는 이야기. 하여간 청소년기에 이 노래는 정말 들을 때마다 가슴을 후벼 팠던 내 개인적 명곡이다.
