Dragonforce - Through The Fire And The Flames

지난 1월 말, 평소에 즐겨듣는 인터넷 록 라디오 채널 Megarock Radio의 유로 메탈 프로그램 [Eurotrip]을 통해 처음 들었던 이 노래는 정말 충격 그 자체였다. 모두들 스피드와 테크닉의 시대는 드림씨어터(Dream Theatre) 이후에는 끝났다고 생각하고 있던 헤비메탈 씬에 아직 이런 밴드가 있었다니!! 99년 런던에서 결성된 드래곤 포스(Dragonforce)는 파워풀한 성량을 과시하는 보컬리스트 지피 쓰레트(ZP Threat)와 기타리스트 허먼 리(Herman Li)와 샘 토트만(Sam Totman)을 주축으로 이들의 대 선배 그룹 헬로윈(Helloween)을 데뷔시킨 레이블 노이즈(Noise)에서 데뷔앨범 [Valley Of The Damned] (2003), [Sonic Firestorm](2004)를 통해 영국 내에서는 어느정도 실력을 인정받아왔으며, 핼포드(Halford), 스트라토바리우스(Stratovarius)등의 오프닝 밴드로 유럽에서도 명성을 쌓았다. 그리고 2년만에 3번째 앨범 [Inhuman Rampage]를 올해 벽두에 본국에서 발표했고, 작년 말 아이언 메이든(Iron Maiden)의 서포트 역할에 이어 이제 오는 6월 20일 미국,캐나다에서는 로드런너(Roadrunner) 레이블을 통해 북아메리카 대륙에 진출할 예정이다. 오는 여름에는 오즈 페스트(Ozzfest 2006: 6/19-8/13)에도 메인스테이지 멤버로 참여할 예정이다. (함께 무대에 오르는 밴드가 시스템 오브 어 다운, 디스터브드,  어벤지드 세븐폴드, 라쿠나 코일 등이니 정말 올해 오즈페스트는 헤비메탈공연 다운 투어일것 같다!)

이들의 사운드가 어떤지 궁금하다면, 정말 이 노래 하나로 다 알 수 있다. (원곡은 7분이 넘는 대곡이나 이 곡에서는 싱글용으로 5분 이내로 줄여놓았다.) 드럼 머신으로 착각할만큼 스피디한 드럼, 전성기의 헬로윈을 연상케 하는 트윈 기타 솔로, 그리고 미하일 키스케나 티모 코티펠로, 제임스 라바리에가 부럽지 않은 파워풀한 보이스까지... 헬로윈과 스트라토바리우스 이후 유로 스피드 메탈에 대한 회의를 가졌던 내 고정관념을 확 뒤집어 주었다. 오즈 페스트만 아니라면 올 여름 송도 팬터포트에 불러도 딱 좋을 밴드인데... 하여간, 이 단순무식한(!) 충격적 뮤직비디오를 보면서 그들의 실체를 확인하시라!!!
